Frieza was introduced in Dragon Ball Z

Despite the fact that Frieza is perhaps the most arrogant character within the Dragon Ball universe, especially when it comes to his ‘superior’ power level, he has explicitly stated that there are two fighters in particular he’d never challenge–and it’s all because Frieza is utterly terrified of the power they wield.

Frieza was introduced in Dragon Ball Z as an evil emperor who held control over the majority of the galaxy–something that was due, in part, to the Saiyan race. Before the events of Dragon Ball, Frieza ruled over the Saiyans and used their unarguable strength to conquer countless planets in his name. Eventually, however, Frieza grew fearful of the Saiyans after having a vision of the one who would ultimately kill him: a legendary Super Saiyan. So, Frieza decided the best thing to do was to cut his losses with the Saiyans and obliterate their entire planet, forcing them into near extinction. While Frieza was confident enough in his own power level to challenge an entire planet of Saiyans (all of whom had literally nothing to lose), he wouldn’t dare pick a fight with two specific individuals.

In the film Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’ (written by Akira Toriyama, directed by Tadayoshi Yamamuro), Frieza is brought back from the dead following his brutal demise by the hand of Trunks in the Dragon Ball Z anime. Upon his return to life, Frieza outlines his plan for revenge against Goku and Vegeta to his subordinates, but Frieza’s second in command tells him that Goku specifically has gotten much stronger since their iconic battle on Planet Namek. When Frieza simply shrugs off that information, the loyal officer persists and explains that Goku even defeated Majin Buu in battle–and that gave Frieza pause. Frieza then says that his father, King Cold, told him there are two entities in the universe he is never to challenge: Majin Buu and Lord Beerus.

Majin Buu and Lord Beerus are the Only Two Fighters Frieza Fears, but Maybe Not Anymore

Lord Beerus is a Destroyer God who has the power to eliminate planets without breaking a sweat and can even collapse the entire universe if he’s fighting at full strength. Beerus’ power is incalculable, therefore Frieza wouldn’t stand a chance against him. Majin Buu is similarly terrifying as he, too, can decimate entire worlds and threaten the lives of everyone in the universe. Not only that, but Buu is a legitimate god-killer as he absorbed the Lord of Lords millions of years before the events of Dragon Ball–making him just as deadly as Lord Beerus to someone like Frieza. However, this information was given to Frieza by his father when Frieza was the same power-level he was when he faced off against Goku on Planet Namek, which is essentially as strong as a Super Saiyan 1. In this film alone, Frieza becomes as powerful as a Super Saiyan God (including Blue) with his Golden Frieza form–and that’s not even the end of it.
